The BC Cancer Agency provides cancer control for the people of British Columbia, including prevention, screening and early detection, diagnosis and treatment services, support programs, community programs, research and education.
The BC Cancer Agency is a member of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA).
The BC Cancer Agency operates through:
- 5 regional cancer centres in Vancouver, Vancouver Island (Victoria), the Southern Interior (Kelowna), the Fraser Valley (Surrey) and Abbotsford. Each cancer centre provides patient services including assessment & diagnosis, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, counseling services and follow-up care.
- A network of 16 chemotherapy clinics, in partnership with regional hospitals
- Physicians travelling to smaller towns to see patients and a network of 70 pharmacies across BC that dispense cancer treatment to bring care closer to home
- Physicians, nurses and other care providers working together to develop guidelines for treatment that are used throughout the province
- A range of support programs for those living with cancer and their families, including support groups, one-to-one counselling, art and music therapy, relaxation therapy and programs for children with cancer patients in their families
- The Screening Mammography Program of BC which offers breast cancer screening in more than 100 communities throughout the province
- The Cervical Cancer Screening Program to detect cervical cancer
- The Hereditary Cancer Program which offers information and genetic counselling to people with a strong family history of cancer
- The Rix Family Discovery Centre which offers a range of cancer information and library services to patients and the public throughout the province
- Provincial networks in cancer rehabilitation and palliative care
- Clinical trials which take place in all cancer centres
- Two major research centres (Vancouver and Victoria) where scientists, clinicians, students, and technicians work to discover what causes cancer, ways to improve treatment and, in future, how to predict its occurrence or prevent it entirely
The BC Cancer Foundation supports the research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency by raising funds in the community.
