The BC Cancer Foundation’s The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is almost here!

Now in its second year- the 60-kilometre walk anticipates raising millions more for breast cancer research

August 16, 2005, Vancouver, B.C - This weekend, August 20th & 21st, thousands of men and women will unite to make a bold statement in the fight against breast cancer. The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation will celebrate its second year in Vancouver, an event which last year raised more than $7 million by over 2,000 Walkers.

After Opening Ceremonies early Saturday morning, Walkers will set off on their two-day, 60-kilometre journey throughout the neighbourhoods of Vancouver, complete with a night of camping, to raise funds for breast cancer research for the BC Cancer Foundation.  It will be an unforgettable weekend of hope, as the participants honour lives lost, celebrate survivors, and help raise millions of dollars towards breast cancer research.

Sarah and Lauren Smith, sisters walking in the event, have a very personal reason for participating this year. Their Mother, Sandy Smith, passed away early this year from breast cancer. "My sister and I have decided to do this 60km walk in her memory. It's our hope that the money we raise can help to keep this disease from breaking apart other families."

Mary McNeil, president & CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation, is excited to walk again this year. "Having participated in the Vancouver walk last year, I'm thrilled to be a part of the event again. I've witnessed the incredible initiatives made possible by the funds we raise" says McNeil, "and that's why I'm so proud to walk every step of the 60 kilometres. I'm walking to honour those who have lost their lives to this dreadful disease, and for the healthy futures of all the women and men among us."

Proceeds raised will benefit the BC Cancer Foundation, an independent charitable organization that raises funds to support research and care through the BC Cancer Agency. With offices in each of the Agency's four cancer centres in the Fraser Valley, Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria, the BC Cancer Foundation was the largest charitable funder of cancer research in B.C. in 2004. The BC Cancer Agency, a member agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, provides a cancer control program for the people of British Columbia, including prevention, screening and early detection, diagnosis and treatment services, support programs, community programs, research and education.
