Surrey family in midst of major life changes wins Lifestyles Lottery Early Bird Prize
October 31, 2003, Vancouver, BC - Dan and Louella Kubbernus were literally in the midst of packing boxes, after selling their family home in South Surrey and shutting down their business to move to a smaller, rental house in White Rock when they got the call from the BC Cancer Foundation that would change their lives.
"I thought something terrible had happened," said Louella Kubbernus. "I saw Dan pacing on the phone, when he suddenly went weak in the knees."
"At first I thought it was a prank," Dan Kubbernus said, "I couldn't believe it. But it turns out it was true."
The couple, who are small business owners well-known to the local community, have four children aged 17 to 27. They have won a luxury fully furnished waterfront condo in Kelowna, and a Sea Ray motorboat, the early bird prize in the BC Cancer Foundation's Lifestyles Lottery.
"With only one son still at home, our business shut down, and moving houses, we had no idea what we were going to do next," says Dan, " We are in the middle of a big life transition."
"All week I was so tired of moving furniture, I kept thinking, 'wouldn't it be nice just to move into a place that was already furnished, and not have a mortgage?'" said Louella. "I just couldn't believe it when we got the phone call that told us we now have a completely furnished home fully paid for. This just couldn't have come at a better time."
With great foresight Louella gave her cell phone number on the lottery ticket form. "I didn't know what date our phone would be cut off," she said. As it turns out the day they got the call, October 30, their old phone was cut off and the new one at their new rental house in White Rock was not yet connected.
Mary McNeil, president and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation presented the Kubbenus' with their prize the same afternoon, at the Grand Prize Showcase home in the Shaughnessy neighborhood in Vancouver. The Kubbenus' ticket will go back into the draw and they will have a chance at that home, too, along with the over 6,000 other prizes to be drawn November 20.
And their advice to procrastinating lottery ticket buyers? "Just buy a ticket in the BC Cancer Foundation Lifestyles Lottery," says Louella. "We have been buying every year. Someone always wins, but if you don't buy you don't win!" The deadline to buy tickets is Thursday November 6 and there are still a few tickets left for the grand prize worth over $2.8 million and over 6,000 other prizes including a waterfront condo in Victoria, with all proceeds supporting life-saving research at the BC Cancer Agency. Tickets can be bought 24 hours a day seven days per week at 1-877-510-8511, or view a full list of locations to buy tickets in person, along with photos of prizes at: www.lifestyleslottery.com.
