Event raises awareness in the fight against cancers below the waist!
(July 10, 2006, Vancouver, BC) – Today a race for victory over cancers below the waist, which account for 38% of all newly-diagnosed cancers and 25% of all cancer deaths in BC, launched with the first-annual BC Cancer Foundation’s The Underwear Affair.
The 10K Run/5K Walk raised necessary funds and awareness for cancers covered by your underwear. Adorned in costumes and smiles, participants bolted their way through the streets of Vancouver raising $500,000 to support prevention and early detection of 7 below-the-belt cancers, including ovarian, uterine, colorectal, prostate, testicular, cervical and bladder cancer at the BC Cancer Agency.
BC Cancer Foundation’s The Underwear Affair wrapped up with EXPOsed, an electrifying afterparty featuring Lillix, The Brandon Paris Band, A Sheep at the Wheel and Vancouver’s hottest DJ talent. Participants, family and friends danced into the evening which culminated with an extravagant costume contest. Event sponsors Calvin Klein Underwear, Vespa, and Kintec Footlabs showcased their latest products for revelers.
Nick Locke, Senior VP Development of the BC Cancer Foundation, and a participant, said, “The BC Cancer Foundation is thrilled by the outpouring of community support for this first-annual event. Never have I seen such an energetic group having such a good time raising funds and awareness in their underwear! The much needed proceeds from The Underwear Affair will make a real difference by supporting critical research at the BC Cancer Agency, right here in BC. I challenge everyone to join us and get registered for 2007 at www.uncoverthecure.org!”
Dr. Sharlene Gill, a medical oncologist with the BC Cancer Agency and a participant in The Underwear Affair, stated, “Cancers below the waist are often kept hidden as taboo and don’t get the funding and awareness they need. I deal with some of these cancers on a daily basis and I’m inspired by my patients - these people are part of my life. Participating in The Underwear Affair provided me with the opportunity to help create awareness and feel good about doing something fun and meaningful!”
“I wanted to support my mom who is an ovarian cancer survivor,” stated participant Ryan Hoy. “I organized a team and we had a great time fundraising, coordinating our costumes and running the route. The afterparty was amazing; The Underwear Affair will definitely be an annual event for me!”
