Gary Collins and Joy MacPhail join cancer’s “Official Opposition”
Nov. 16, 2006, Vancouver, B.C - Gary Collins and Joy MacPhail didn’t see eye-to-eye when they sat across from each other in the Legislature, but they now stand side-by-side in the fight against cancer as volunteer directors on the board of the BC Cancer Foundation.
Collins, former Minister of Finance for the BC Liberals and MacPhail, former leader of the BC New Democratic Party, made the announcement in the kitchen of the BC Cancer Foundation’s Lifestyles Lottery Shaughnessy prize home, where the two joked and baked muffins for media using cancer-fighting ingredients.
Ads featuring the two former politicians and promoting the fundraising lottery are scheduled to run in the coming days.
“Politically, Joy and I have our differences, but cancer doesn’t care how you vote. We’ve joined the ‘official opposition’ to cancer because, directly, or indirectly, the disease can affect every one of us,” said Collins.
“Saving lives is more important than politics. It’s that simple,” said MacPhail. “Gary and I are both on the same page when it comes to working together against cancer, and we’re lucky to have his support.”
Collins and MacPhail will both serve three year terms on the BC Cancer Foundation’s board. MacPhail serves as the chair of the Lifestyles Lottery management committee force and Collins is a director at large.
The final deadline to buy tickets for the Lifestyles Lottery is Thursday, November 23 at midnight. For more information, visit www.LifestylesLottery.com. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by calling 1 866 939 5508
Three prize homes are up for grabs; in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood, Bear Mountain resort in Victoria, and the Okanagan. “Where else can you get into BC’s hot property market with only $100? We’re urging everyone to pick up the phone and buy a ticket right now and help save lives,” added MacPhail.
The BC Cancer Foundation is an independent charitable organization that directly supports research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority.
