BC Cancer Foundation clarifies confusion over dancers' donation
Feb. 14, 2007, Vancouver, B.C - BC Cancer Foundation president and CEO Mary McNeil clarified today that neither the Foundation nor the BC Cancer Agency has refused a donation from the Exotic Dancers for Cancer of Vancouver.
“The BC Cancer Foundation was not offered the proceeds of this group’s upcoming fundraising event.” McNeil said. “There has been some confusion among the public and the media about the name of the charity – the Breast Cancer Society of Canada, based in Ontario – that turned down the gift.”
McNeil explained that many individuals and groups organize fundraising events in support of the BC Cancer Foundation and that all donations go directly and exclusively to fund research and enhancements to patient care at the BC Cancer Agency, the province’s cancer control agency.
“BC Cancer Foundation donations benefit all types of cancer and cancer patients right across B.C.,” McNeil said. “For example, the Foundation’s major fundraising event in August, the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, has raised over $12 million for breast cancer research and programs at the BC Cancer Agency.”
“If this group of women were to offer their support to the BC Cancer Foundation we would be proud to accept their donation,” McNeil added. “Too many of us are touched by cancer. It affects one in three of us, from all ages and professions, men and women of all ages. What is wonderful is when all of us participate in finding solutions to the disease by contributing to cancer research.”
The BC Cancer Foundation is an independent charitable organization founded in 1935, when cancer outcomes in the province were the worst in Canada. Today, B.C. has the best patient outcomes. The Foundation maintains offices in each of the BC Cancer Agency’s four centres, on Vancouver Island, the Southern Interior, the Fraser Valley and
in Vancouver.
The BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, provides cancer care for everyone in British Columbia.
