Anita Cochrane
If anything it is not Anita who must keep up with life but the other way around. For her honeymoon she and her husband biked across Canada. Hiking, kayaking and dragon boat racing are what weekends are made for. Then there is the cancer.
First diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 the disease was quickly brought under control. Or so Anita thought. Three short years later the breast cancer had spread to her bones. Ten chemotherapy treatments later and the disease was back under control. However it is not in remission. Her disease is considered chronic.
Why is Anita still alive? She credits her survival to a drug called Herceptin, which is the first of many targeted treatments that The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is investigating and researching. As captain of Team LiveSTRONG her goal is to raise $53,400 in next year’s Weekend to End Breast Cancer Walk.
All proceeds raised from the walk will benefit the BC Cancer Foundation which is funneling critical money into the BC Cancer Agency’s research to develop innovative new treatments for breast cancer.
“I truly believe they will find more targeted therapies that will not only help me, but all women that have to face this disease,” says Anita. “The trend is in the right direction. Lives are lengthening.”
