BC Cancer Foundation appoints new president and CEO

January 29, 2008 - Brian Kenning, chair of the BC Cancer Foundation Board, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David MacLean as president and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation, effective May 1, 2008.

Originally a family physician in rural Nova Scotia, Dr. MacLean has a distinguished background in healthcare and academia as both a physician and researcher. He was the founding dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, has worked extensively with the World Health Organization and been a member of the boards of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of British Columbia and theYukon, and the Fraser Health Authority.

Kenning said, “The BC Cancer Foundation Board is very excited by the global fundraising opportunities Dr. MacLean's appointment opens to the Foundation, in our support of the BC Cancer Agency as a world-leader in cancer control and translational research.”

Dr. MacLean is very familiar with the BC Cancer Agency’s unique population-based system of cancer control, having chaired a task force to develop a new vision for cancer care and prevention in Nova Scotia. The new system was modeled largely on the BC Cancer Agency, after a review of various cancer care models around the world. B.C. has among the best cancer outcomes in Canada.

Dr. MacLean said, "I am delighted to be joining the team at the BC Cancer Foundation, the lead fundraising organization for cancer research in the province.” He added, “The people of B.C. can be proud of having one of the best cancer treatment and control systems in the world, through the BC Cancer Agency. I very much look forward to working with all the players in the cancer field in B.C. so we can collectively make the system even better."

Dr. Simon Sutcliffe, president of the BC Cancer Agency said, “Donor support to the BC Cancer Foundation is vital to the BC Cancer Agency’s continuing progress, and Dr. MacLean’s familiarity with the Agency will be a real asset in helping attract further support of our mission, particularly in the area of translational research.” Established in 1935, the BC Cancer Foundation raises funds to support research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency and maintains offices in each of the Agency’s five regional cancer centres, located in the Fraser Valley, the Southern Interior, Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Abbotsford (anticipated to open in summer 2008) .
