BC Cancer Foundation Appoints New President & CEO
June 16, 2009, Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver, BC – Douglas (Doug) Nelson has recently been appointed to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the BC Cancer Foundation.
“Doug is a highly successful leader in the health research development field,” says John Jennings, chair of BC Cancer Foundation. “Through his leadership, the Board is confident that he will take the BC Cancer Foundation to the next level, enabling us to fund many further discoveries and initiatives in cancer research.”
Prior to joining the BC Cancer Foundation, Nelson was the Chief Development Officer and Associate Vice President, External Relations at the University of Alberta where he led the successful conclusion of Campaign 2008, the second largest fundraising campaign of its kind in Canadian history.
From 2005 to 2007 Nelson was Assistant Dean, External Relations, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta where he increased fundraising totals from $8.7 million in 2004 to $16.8 million in 2005 with a further increase to $27.7 million in 2006.
Nelson also held senior positions with the University of British Columbia and the University of Calgary from 1997 to 2005.
Nelson is a graduate of the University of British Columbia with a Masters in Higher Education and also holds a Bachelor of Arts, Political Science from the University of Calgary.
“I am passionate about the importance and relevance of cancer to all British Columbians and about the BC Cancer Foundation’s ability to make a substantial difference in the lives of people affected by cancer,” says Nelson. “Over the next five years we will nearly double our funding of cancer research and care in BC from $16 to over $30 million”.
The BC Cancer Foundation raises funds to support breakthrough research and enhancements to patient care at the BC Cancer Agency, throughout B.C. The BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, provides a comprehensive cancer control program for everyone in B.C. and Yukon.
