BC Cancer Foundation donors fund ground-breaking Ovarian Cancer discovery
More than150 BC Cancer Foundation guests gathered at the BC Cancer Agency Research Centre Tuesday night to celebrate the announcement of a ground-breaking Ovarian cancer research discovery.
With Dr. David Huntsman, head of the Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OvCaRe) on hand to explain his findings, the excitement was palpable. "Thank you," Dr. Huntsman explained. "I would have been laughed out of the room if I had tried to apply for a grant for this project. We (OvCaRe team) had never worked together, had never used this technology before. We didn't even know what we were looking for. You, the donors, took a chance and took a risk on us. Thank you."
The most moving portion of the evening came from Barbara Johns, who graciously shared her story of her battle with Ovarian cancer and how the tumour tissue she donated played a role in the discovery.
